On hot summer days simply opening a window to cool down isn’t enough. So we have to turn to a fan. But are actually good for you?
The main pro to using a fan is that they keep you cool and comfortable. Whilst this is important on a hot day, it is also essential on a summer night. If you’re too hot, you may struggle to fall or stay asleep. If you do sleep with a fan, make sure it is far away from you so you are protected from a concentrated airflow.
If your room or house gets quite stuffy, a fan may help with this as well. They help to circulate the stale air and keep it fresh. Fans are also a great source of white noise – perfect for helping you relax and fall asleep easily. So if it’s a cool, relaxing night sleep you are after, you will benefit from a fan.
However, fans used incorrectly can also have bad affects on you and your health. The overuse of a fan, or placing it too close to yourself can dry out your mouth, nose and throat. This can cause headaches, sore throats and sometimes snoring. Fans can also circulate dust and pollen in the air which can trigger, and dry out your skin and eyes.
To tackle this, ensure you buy a portable fan and place it 2-3 feet away from any person. Also opt for one with oscillating, speed and timer features to protect you from concentrated airflow. If you struggle with allergies, also make sure to wipe down the blades to keep them dust free.
