When you’re after some fresh air and something to do, one of the best things is a long walk or hike. But, with busy work and social lives, it may mean going for a hike when its slightly darker – especially in winter. And one of the first things you need to consider when going on a dimly lit hike is your health and safety. But how do you keep safe on whilst on a winter hike?
Layer up
It goes without saying that in winter it will be cold, wet, rainy, and in some cases also snowy. And the best way to stay warm is by layering up. This doesn’t mean you should put on as many layers as possible. You need to wear the correct layers which will help keep you warm and dry. The only layers you need are a base layer, mid layer and a top layer.
The base layer should be a pair of thermal leggings and top that help to wick away any moisture and insulate the body. Your mid layer should be a fleece or hoodie that is comfortable and helps to insulate the body. And the top layer should be a good quality waterproof coat to help keep you dry.
Make yourself seen
Just like it will be cold in winter, it will also be darker than the summer, which means you need to make yourself visible to others. Bright colours and hi-vis clothing are the perfect way to go when trying to make yourself seen in the dark. But what if it’s not that dark out?
Even if its still light out, you better off wearing bright colours or hi-vis compared to dull colours. What if you end up staying out longer than expected or have an accident, you will be easy to spot in something neon compared to all black.
Know your route
Winter hiking adds a level of danger due to the dark and colder days so all thoughts of spontaneity should be out the window. This means knowing the route before you go so you don’t bump into any obstacles along the way. The last thing you want whilst on an unplanned hiking trail in the dark, is to get lost or find yourself of difficult terrain. Sticking to routes you know and have been on before will help keep you safe and out of danger.
Don’t go alone
One of the best ways to stay safe on a winter hike is to not go alone. Going with someone not only provides you with some company, but also someone that can go for help in case of an accident. You should also make sure to tell someone where you are going in case of an emergency.
With the help of these tips, you should be all set for a safe winter hike.
