Description

Renogy Pro 12.8V 500Ah Underseat Smart Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery

High-Capacity LiFePO4 Power for Off-Grid Applications

The Renogy Pro 12.8V 500Ah Smart Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery is a high-capacity energy-storage solution designed for motorhomes, caravans, RVs, solar systems, trolling motors, marine applications, camping, wind power and off-grid installations. Its large 500Ah capacity and 12.8V nominal voltage provide substantial stored energy for applications requiring extended periods of independent power.

Built using automotive-grade lithium iron phosphate battery cells, the battery is designed to provide high energy density, deep discharge capability, efficient operation and a long service life. Renogy specifies a 3500-cycle life at 80% depth of discharge (DOD) for the 500Ah version.

The battery can safely be discharged to 80% DOD and is designed to provide substantially more usable energy than a comparable sealed lead-acid battery. Its high capacity makes it particularly suitable for larger off-grid systems where reliable energy storage is required for longer trips or periods away from mains power.

Underseat Design for Motorhomes and Caravans

Despite its substantial 500Ah capacity, the battery has been specifically developed with underseat installation in mind. Renogy describes the Pro Series underseat design as tailored for compatibility with caravan and motorhome chassis and under-seat installations.

The battery measures 355 × 350 × 198mm and weighs 50kg, giving installers a compact footprint for the amount of energy storage provided. The housing incorporates handles to assist with handling and positioning during installation.

The battery can be mounted on its bottom or on the sides, with the exception of the top side containing the battery terminals. Optional mounting accessories such as a battery tray, tie-down strap and mounting screws can be used where required for the particular installation.

For best performance, Renogy recommends installing the battery in a clean, cool and dry location, away from water, oil and dirt, with sufficient airflow to prevent excessive heat build-up. The manual recommends approximately 5–10cm clearance between batteries and at least 20cm of clearance around the indicated terminal/ventilation area.

Intelligent Self-Heating for Cold-Weather Charging

The built-in self-heating function is designed to improve charging performance when temperatures fall below freezing. The heater activates automatically when the battery temperature drops below 0°C and switches off once the battery temperature rises above 10°C.

A stable charging current greater than 12A per battery in a parallel battery bank is required for normal operation of the self-heating function. When operating at its full 175W/12A heating power, Renogy specifies a temperature rise of approximately 5°C per hour.

This makes the battery particularly suited to motorhomes, caravans, marine applications, camping and other installations that may be exposed to cold weather. The specified charging temperature range is -20°C to 55°C, while the discharge range is -20°C to 60°C.

Smart Battery Management and Bluetooth Monitoring

The integrated Smart Battery Management System (BMS) provides multiple battery protection functions and alarms to help maintain safe and stable operation. Protection includes monitoring for cell overvoltage and undervoltage, high and low temperature conditions, charge and discharge overcurrent and short circuits.

The BMS also provides automatic protection against abnormal operating conditions. For example, charge overcurrent protection is triggered at 270A for 10 seconds, while primary discharge overcurrent protection activates at 320A for 1 second. Short-circuit protection is specified at a discharge current of 1800A.

The battery incorporates Bluetooth connectivity, allowing users to monitor battery information through the free Renogy App. For short-range monitoring, a compatible smartphone should be kept within approximately 3 metres of the battery.

For more advanced system monitoring and longer-range communication, the battery can connect to a Renogy ONE Core, sold separately. The battery also supports communication with compatible Renogy power supply and monitoring devices through its communication ports and RV-C communication system.

High-Current Performance and Flexible System Expansion

The 500Ah battery is designed for high-current applications, with a maximum continuous charge current of 200A and a maximum continuous discharge current of 250A. The specified peak discharge capability is 300A for 10 seconds.

Renogy recommends a charging current of up to 200A for a single 12.8V 500Ah battery. The standard charging process uses a constant current of 200A until the battery reaches 14.4V, followed by constant-voltage charging. Charging is considered complete when the current falls below 25A, with the standard charging process typically taking approximately 2.5 hours under the specified conditions.

The battery is designed for parallel connection only. Up to eight identical compatible batteries can be connected in parallel, allowing the system to reach 12.8V, 4,000Ah and 51,200Wh (51.2kWh).

When connecting batteries in parallel, Renogy recommends using batteries with the same chemistry, rated capacity, nominal voltage, brand and model. The batteries should also be balanced before connection, with a voltage difference of less than 0.1V recommended between individual batteries.

Installation, Charging and Technical Specifications

The battery can be integrated with suitable inverters, DC-DC chargers, MPPT charge controllers and DC distribution panels. Appropriately sized circuit breakers, fuses or disconnects should be used to protect connected electrical equipment, with Renogy specifying that these should be sized by a certified electrician, licensed installer or appropriate regional authority.

The battery uses M8 × 1.25 × 16mm long terminal bolts, with a recommended terminal torque of 8N·m (70.8in·lbs). Correct polarity, suitable cable sizing and secure connections are essential for safe operation.

For charging, compatible lithium iron phosphate charging equipment should be used, with a recommended charge/boost/bulk voltage of 14.4V ±0.2V. The battery should not be charged above its maximum 200A continuous charging current or discharged above its 250A continuous discharge rating.
