Please note before ordering: This is a special order and can not be returned for refund.

If you're heading to Europe with a caravan, trailer tent, horsebox, car transporter trailer or any trailer over 750 kg, you will need a separate trailer registration plate by law. To order your fully compliant plate from us, you’ll first need to register your trailer with the DVLA. When you order below, you’ll be prompted to upload your Trailer number plate authorisation certificate (eV948/2) – the email you receive straight after DVLA registration. We'll then manufacture your plate and send it to you quickly, so you can travel with complete peace of mind.

Description

Planning a European road trip with your caravan, trailer tent, horsebox, or commercial trailer in tow? Changes to UK law that took effect on 28 March 2019 mean that any trailer over 750 kg gross weight being used in most European countries must now be registered with the DVLA and display a dedicated trailer registration number plate – in addition to your towing vehicle's own plate.

This specially‑designed plate meets all the requirements of the Trailer Registration Regulations 2018 and is produced only by Registered Number Plate Suppliers (RNPS). It is the same shape as a standard motorcycle plate, featuring solid black characters on a white background, and must be fixed to the rear of your trailer in a clearly visible, vertical position. Incorrect display can result in a fine of up to £1,000.

When registration – and this plate – are needed

You must register your trailer (and therefore display this plate) if you are towing it in or through most European countries, including popular destinations such as France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Scandinavia.

Registration is not required for journeys that stay entirely within the UK, travel only between the UK and Ireland, or visit only Spain, Malta or Cyprus. However, if you drive through another European country to reach one of those destinations you will still need to register and display the plate.

How to order your plate – the eV948/2 certificate

To have your trailer registration plate made, you must provide a 'Trailer number plate authorisation certificate' (form eV948/2). This is emailed to you by the DVLA immediately after you complete your trailer registration and is valid for 5 days.

When you place your order on our website you will be prompted to upload a copy of your eV948/2 certificate.

Please note that you will also need your unique trailer registration number – a letter followed by seven numbers (e.g. A 1234567) – which is assigned by the DVLA during registration.

A few extra points to remember

  • Carry your trailer registration certificate with you when travelling abroad – foreign authorities may ask to see it.
  • Display a UK sticker on the trailer (but not on the registration plate itself) to avoid any risk of enforcement action in some countries.
  • Still need to register? You can do so through the DVLA's online trailer registration service. The cost is £26 for a first registration, and you will receive your eV948/2 certificate by email immediately afterwards.
