Bike Checks You Should Do Before A Ride

With the weather getting warmer and days getting longer, it’s the perfect time to dust off your bike and enjoy a ride in the great outdoors. But before you head out, there are some checks you should do to make sure you have a safe bike ride.

Tires

One of the easiest checks you can do is on your tires. Any issues with your tires can make your bike difficult to control, slow and sluggish. When checking your tires, you need to look for any stones stuck in the tread. If there is anything stuck in the tire tread, carefully remove it to prevent any damage. You also need to the check the tires for any cracks, cuts, baldness, and if they are flat. If there is any severe damage, you will need to change the tire.

Wheels

Whilst checking your tires, you should also check both bike wheels. They both should be tightly fitted, and the quick-release lever should be securely closed. This ensures that the wheels stay secure during the ride. You should also check that the wheel spokes have the correct tension. This will help with wheel strength and durability.

Saddle

No matter how long the ride, you want to be as comfortable as possible and one of the easiest ways to achieve this is with your saddle. Checking your saddle is simple. You just need to make sure that it is set straight and is at the correct height – high enough for you to fully extend your leg when peddling.

Chain and pedals

Something you may not always think about checking but is still important is your chain and pedals. Your bike chain should be clean and well-oiled so that the bike runs smoothly. The bike pedals should also turn smoothly for easy pedaling. This can be checked by spinning the pedals whilst your bike is stationary. If they don’t spin smoothly, you may need to remove the pedals, give them a thorough clean and then re-install them.

Brakes

The most important thing you should check to stay safe on your bike. You need to make sure both the front and rear brakes are working properly for maximum safety. If the brake lever pulls against the handlebar when applied, you will need to adjust the brake cable. Also ensure that both sides of the brake mechanism move when the brake is applied.

Once you’ve done these five checks, you will be ready for a safe and comfortable bike ride.
