The Different Types of Bikes Out There

Fancy treating yourself to a new bike? Not quite sure which type would be best for you? Lucky for you, we have broken down the differences between each type of bicycle out there to help you with your decision.

Mountain bikes are perfect for off road use like trails thanks to their chunkier, knobbly tires which help with traction, and varying types of suspension. Mountain bikes with only front suspension are hardtails, those with front and back suspension are full suspension, and those with non are called rigid. Mountain bikes are perfect for those who want to go on difficult terrain and bike trails.

Road bikes are the opposite of a mountain bike. Instead of chunky tires, road bikes have skinny tires as well as a lightweight frame and drop handlebars (curl back down under themselves), all optimized for speed whilst on the road. They also have a high gear ration to help you go faster (a must when on the road!). Road bikes are the ideal choice for someone looking to cycle on roads and tarmac, for commuting, competing or for fun.

Hybrids are a mixture of both road and mountain bikes which gives you the versatility to go anywhere. Like a mountain bike, they have flat handlebars and can have either front suspension or non. And just like a road bike, they have narrower tires which can be changed for thicker mountain bike tires. With a mixture of road and mountain bike characteristics, hybrid bikes are great for someone who wants the best of both worlds and to go on varying terrains.

Electric bikes can be either a mountain, road, or hybrid bike frame but are fitted with a battery and silent motor. Being part electric, electric bikes can assist you in peddling and give you an extra boost when going uphill or long distances. Due to it featuring a batter and motor, electric bikes also tend to be a lot heavier than other types of bikes. Despite this, they are the perfect choice for those who want to go long distances but without all the effort.

Folding bikes are a little different to the other four types in both shape and size. They have a more upright geometry and have smaller wheel. The frame is also foldable so you can store it in any small spaces. With its compact size, a folding bike is ideal for those who want to include a short amount of cycling on their commute or if you want a bike but have no storage space.
