Gone are the days of shorts and t-shirts for a sunny trek, and the days to wrap up warm are slowly approaching. And with the change in seasons, comes a need to change your outdoor gear. But what are essential for you to keep warm?
Base layer
This is the layer that is closest to your skin and is one of the most important layers for keeping you warm. Whether it be a thermal vest or thermal leggings, make sure they are made from wicking material to absorb and remove any sweat and moisture away from the skin.
Mid layer
Your mid layer is another important layer that helps with insulation and retaining body heat – a must when out in the wet and windy weather. It is also a simple part of the layering process as all you need is a good quality pair of waterproof trousers, preferably designed for outdoor activities, and fleece. When looking for a fleece, try to pick on that is made from synthetic fibres that traps the air and keeps you warm. If you are still unsure on which would be best, 100% polyester fleeces are a great choice.
Top layer
A top layer, unlike your other layers, is the one that needs to be waterproof and windproof to stop you from getting wet. Whilst you may think that any old waterproof jacket will do, you need to make sure it is long enough so that it overlaps with your bottoms to fully protect you from the autumn and winter elements. You will also need to ensure that it has a good, sturdy hood to keep your head warm and dry. And to stop you from getting sweaty and stuffy in your waterproof coat, make sure it is made from a breathable material like nylon and polyester.
Accessories
One thing you might not think is important but is incredibly beneficial is your accessories. Whilst they may seem like such a small add-on, they are the best thing to help keep your extremities from going cold. With your hands being one of the first things to go cold, it is important to keep them covered with a good quality pair of gloves. For the best protection against the cold, you are better off layering up your gloves – a thin layer for insulation on the bottom, and a heavy-duty waterproof pair to go over the top.
Gloves aren’t the only accessory you need to think about. You lose a lot of your body heat through your head, so keeping that covered with a hat is a great way to retain any heat. For the best insulation, ensure your chosen wooly hat is 100% acrylic fine knot and are double layered.
With the help of these four essentials, you will feel less of the cold and toasty warm this autumn and winter.
